Pranayam should be practiced in a clean and airy place preferably in solitude or atleast with as less noise disturbance as possible.
Pranayam is best done sitting on the floor. The suitable postures are Padmasan, Siddhasan or even Sukhasan. Sukhasan is a simple way of sitting cross legged on the floor normally as you often do.
If somebody is suffering from back ache or any other disease of the bones and legs and finds it difficult to sit on the floor cross legged he or she can sit on a comfortable chair.
Kindly note no matter how or on what you sit your spinal cord has to be absolutely as erect as possible, except for people who are suffering from any disease of the spinal cord and cannot keep it absolutely erect.
The best time to perform Pranayam is in the morning, but it can be performed in the evening also after a minimum gap of 5 hours after you have taken your last meals. The ideal gap is 6 to 7 hours.
Please clean your bowels in the morning before performing the Pranayam. If you are suffering from constipation kindly take a mild laxative in the night so your intestines are fairly clean.
Pranayam should be performed at the chosen time regularly.
If on any of the days you feel exhausted, if you haven’t slept well or if you are very much still feeling energy less, kindly do not perform Pranayam.
People who are severely ill should perform only one Pranayam mainly Anulom Vilom for few minutes every day. They can keep increasing the timing as they become better and better by performing this Pranayam. Later on they can add Bhastrika and Kapalbhati. Bhastrika and Kapalbhati should be performed by ill people at a very slow speed and with minimum of exertion. It has been seen that ill people have been able to get up from the bed in a fairly short period of time and have been able to resume performing all the 7 Pranayams in due course of time.
Please do consult your doctor or your medical practitioner when you are very ill. If he suggests that you should not exert yourself even this little bit kindly do not perform any Pranayam whatsoever till you are in better health- condition delete this word.
